Change of circumstance
A Mentor once gave me this piece of wisdom ‘Ministry begins and ends in marriage and family life.’ In July 2016 Derek received written confirmation from his employer of 36 years that he had been placed on reduced working hours. There is not an optimistic outlook for his continuance in his employment in the long term.
In our marriage when faced with difficulty Derek and I have always taken a united proactive approach and it is now my wish that I am free from parish responsibilities in order to bring my pastoral experience to a time of change for us both. We need to travel this journey together in love and support each other. In light of such a drastic change in circumstances I am taking a sabbatical from parish ministry for the foreseeable future.

Condolences
We learn with great regret that Evelyn Shearn of North Strand Parish has passed away at a nursing home in Ratoath, surrounded by her daughters, among them Margaret Lawton, Hon Parochial Secretary, and other family members. We offer our prayerful sympathy to them all. May the Lord remember his faithful servant and grant her a place in his coming Kingdom.
In memoriam
Herbert Moore died in Wyoming on Tuesday 2 August 2016, one of a family formerly of this Parish. He moved away many years ago as did Betty Moore, now living in the West of Ireland, who with Herbert’s brother and sister Richard and Ruby asked the Rector to officiate at the burial of ashes in the family grave at Mount Jerome on Saturday 15 October.
Big Birthdays
The Gardner family looks forward to Wednesday 19 October, the day after St Luke’s Day, and their Mother’s eighty-ninth birthday. A little lunch will be enjoyed at the Ashling Hotel Parkgate Street, a favourite resort, after the administration of the Holy Communion in the family home, with the Vicar, Archdeacon David Pierpoint, former Curate-Assistant in this Parish, who has recently celebrated his own sixtieth birthday.
Sunday School
At time of writing, we await the completion of the process of Garda vetting on behalf of Adrienne Lee, in order to facilitate Sunday School in the coming weeks. Adrienne has already met many parents and children at the first Family Service of the new term. Although the children are mostly small, we know they will grow, and hope Sunday School will grow with them. Garda vetting is now done on-line and is much more rapid than it used to be. All volunteers for Sunday School and for St Catherine’s NS require to be Garda vetted for work with young people, many of them, like Adrienne, over and over again, for different aspects of her work with children, for example, ‘Play – Act ‘ Drama Classes, spontaneous activity full of adventure and discovery. http://playact.ie/

St Audoen’s Church
Did you know that the OPW (then known as the Board of Works) carried out repair works to the Portlester Chapel as far back as 1887? Minutes in the Vestry Minute Book 1887 – 1913 dated 13 January 1887, record that the ‘’Board of Works had commenced to repair the ruins of Lord Portlester’s Chapel, brickwork was cleared from between the mullions of the windows…and the mouldings of the piers repaired’. The same minutes record that ‘some work was undertaken at the same time by the Board of Works, ‘in the ruined aisle and a fresco.in vivid colours…was discovered behind some blocking masonry.’
We’re getting ready for Culture Night! Hope you are too! It’s one of our favourite events of the year and we’re just counting down the days and the hours and the minutes! Atmospheric doesn’t even begin to describe St Audoen’s by night! It’s magical!

St Audoen’s Park
The former Churchyard is about to be laid out in a new design intended to reduce anti-social behaviour by removing blind spots and hiding places. We are anxious to preserve our railings, which take the form of croziers, recalling the Episcopal status of St Audoen, Bishop of Rouen. Much in need of restoration, we hope they will look like the very similar ones (presumably of the same date) at the West end of Christ Church Cathedral, beautifully recreated after the fall of the scaffolding in recent years. David Healy of the St. Audeon’s Park design team (Dublin City Council, Eblana House, Marrowbone Lane) has met with the clergy and Churchwardens and our architect Michael Halpenny to discuss the proposed scheme.
Installing a Dean
The Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral is elected by the Chapter from among its members. The Rector is a member (Prebendary of Maynooth) and was honoured to be asked to chaplain the Rt Hon Arlene Foster (one of the readers), Martin McGuinness and the Taoiseach’s Aide-de-camp at the installation of the Revd Dr William Morton, Dean of Derry, and Deputy Lieutenant for Derry since 2014, who succeeds Dean Victor Stacey who retired last March. All three occupied the Plunket Pew, opposite the State Pew. Archbishop Plunket’s statue still stands in Kildare Place, one of the most deserted spots in the city, for all its proximity to the Dáil and the Shelbourne Hotel.
