The Easter Garden
Thanks to all who prepared the Churches for Easter with flowers and decorations. The effect, contrasting with the austerity of Lent, was very fine. The children enjoyed their egg hunt in the Rectory garden. The Rector enjoyed finding the ones they missed! Thanks also to those volunteers who provide monthly hospitality after family service, as well as those who maintain the ministry to the children, a vital part of any growing Parish.

35th Donore Avenue Scouts
The Scouts 35th Scout group, Donore Avenue brought shamrock to St Catherine & St James on St Patrick’s Day, led by John Lawlor. Flag bearers presented the Scouts and National flags at the beginning of the service along with a basket of shamrock. Revd Martha Waller blessed the shamrock and all the members of Scouting Ireland and thanked them for taking the time to come along after attending St. Patrick’s Day Mass at St. Teresa’s Church, Donore Avenue. Lessons were read by members of the group. After the service the scouts distributed shamrock to the congregation. Thank you to those scouts who stayed to collect the books after the service and stack them back on the shelves. This was done quietly and without drawing attention to themselves or looking for praise from anyone. Well done to all involved in this very welcome ongoing ecumenical development. We at St Catherine & St. James look forward to welcoming the 35th Donore Avenue Scouts back again in the coming months.

John Lawlor, 35th Donore Avenue Scouts
St Audoen’s
Two concerts were held recently at St Audoen’s, the first at lunchtime with a choir from Wales, guided by a former member Ciaran Yeo, a singer in Christ Church Cathedral Choir. Stephen Yeo, his Father, sang at one time in St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir and lived in 258 South Circular Road, sharing the house with the Curate-Assistant, Ian Sherwood, now Chaplain in Istanbul. A retiring collection was taken up for the benefit of Trust, the agency in Bride Road for the homeless. Dr Alice Leahy addressed the audience and thanked the young people for their singing and all who contributed.
The second concert by Trio Mediaeval also went very well. They are a Norwegian ensemble that has captivated audiences with medieval music, traditional Norwegian ballads and contemporary works. Catherine O Connor of the OPW tells me that they had a full house and the music was beautiful. Music Network have sent the Parish their facility fee. Catherine O Connor also tells me that the opening date for the Visitor Centre will be Thursday 25 April (feast of St Mark the Evangelist). We look forward very much to their coming. The OPW is supporting The Gathering Ireland 2013.

Children at St Audoen’s
Charlie Kavanagh Doyle is the son of Naomi (Lawton) and Phillip Kavanagh Doyle, who met while students at The King’s Hospital and were married in Abbeyleix by Archdeacon David Pierpoint, who baptised Charlie in All Saints Grangegorman.
He is grandson of Philip Lawton, organist of St. Audoen’s and the late Barbara (Boyland), great-grandson of John and Kathleen Lawton and great-great-grandson of Percival and Clare Lawton of All Saints Grangegorman where Percival sang in the choir up to his death in 1927. He served with the Royal engineers during WWI having served in the Second Boer War. There is a long tradition of church music in the family. Naomi and Catherine were in King’s Hospital Choir and with others have formed the Pals Singers, who have sung on special occasions at St Audoen’s.
Phillip is a Leinster and Ireland rugby fan, hence the Irish jerseys! At the time of the photograph Abbie (Abigail Barbara) was a week old and Charlie will be four in May.
St Mary’s Home
The Home in Pembroke Park is known to many for the care of Church of Ireland ladies. The Community of St John the Evangelist has presided over it, despite falling numbers due to a lack of vocations to the religious life. One of the oldest members, Sister Ann, has died, aged well over a hundred years of age, having been born in the reign of Edward VII, during which a great International Exhibition was held in Herbert Park nearby.

A supporter, from his wheelchair, of Affirming Catholicism Ireland, his Father was Dean’s Verger at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin, succeeded by Joe Coady many years ago. After the cremation, a Requiem Eucharist was celebrated at St Johns Malone, Belfast. When Archdeacon Jenkins (1898-1998) spoke of the ‘old’ Verger he meant Kelly. Fred McKeown, Dean’s Verger now, remembers Kelly smoking his pipe. I wonder how many years of service those three men have given up to now? Joe Coady’s son Clive’s funeral was in Christ Church very recently, with a very large congregation, a fine tribute to his memory. Joe’s son in law, the Revd Ken Rue, preached.
