Review
Review readers may know that notes are sent in to the office of the editor, ahead of the deadline of midday on the fifteenth of the month. The published Review is distributed to a small number of collection centres, in our case, St Ann’s Dawson Street. We are grateful to Margery Bell for taking on the role of distributor, which requires the reviews to be collected, no easy task as Dawson Street continues to be a building site, or rather, more like a bomb site! They are then available for collection at the Parish churches on the first Sunday of the month. The Rector will always be glad of photographs to enhance and enliven the Review notes, whether recent pictures of Baptisms or historical and archival material. A picture is worth a thousand words. Coincidentally, the editor asks for each Parish’s Review notes to be one thousand words long. The Rector, who compiles them, attempts to ensure that this requirement is exactly met, each month.
Confirmation
It follows that these notes will be in the hands of subscribers on the same day as our two candidates will be confirmed, David Monaghan and Shalom Ogbata, whose family homes are near the Church they attend, St Catherine & St James, Donore Avenue. We hope to have a good picture of them both with the Archbishop and their families next time!
June
The month promises to be a busy one. Monday 5 June will be a Bank Holiday, an event which has an ever increasing impact on people’s movements. Can you imagine what life was like when there weren’t any? Christ Church Cathedral Chapter will meet on Friday 9 June, feast of St Columba of Iona. The Kate O’Brien window in St Catherine & St James depicts him, and events in his life, and the natural world to which he was so close, like early Celtic Christians. Legend has it that he (like many others) had a pet crane, as seen in the stained glass, a large bird, similar to a heron, now to be seen again in Ireland after a long absence.
The Irish Association of Change Ringers will meet at St Audoen’s Cornmarket between 14.00 and 16.00 on Saturday 10 June for a District Practice. We are glad that they include St Audoen’s in their monthly itinerary, even though we only have six bells, just as we are most grateful to the St Patrick’s Cathedral ringers who come to St Audoen’s so regularly on Sunday mornings, before moving on to St Patrick’s.
The School Board of Management will meet on Monday 12 June. Its most immediate and important item of business is the replacement of the Principal Teacher, April Cronin, a very hard task indeed. Few Schools can have benefitted more from the many years of industry and dedication that she has given to the children of St Catherine’s, one of the first Roman Catholic schoolteachers to be appointed to a Church of Ireland National School, a tribute to her and to the foresight of the late the Revd Canon John Crawford.
The annual Dean’s Gift Day will be Saturday 17 June. Last year, enough was raised to buy a grand piano, suitable for the accompaniment of the singing and for use on its own or combined with other instruments. The musical forces capable of being assembled at St Patrick’ are now both rich and varied, more so than ever before.
The Revd Suzanne Cousins, who as a student was placed in this parish, will visit Dublin on Monday 19 June. Her interest in Inter-faith Dialogue led her to bring a group from the Parish to pay a visit to the Iman Yahyah (John) of the Mosque, formerly Donore Presbyterian Church, on the South Circular Road. Her addition to last month’s notes did not mention the name of the Parish where she serves, as Bishop’s Curate, Moville (St Columb), Greencastle (St Finian), Donagh (Carndonagh), Culdaff (Carrowbeg) and Cloncha (Malin), in the diocese of Raphoe and the County of Donegal. What history there is in these names, leading us back through time to the days of St Columba (feast day, Friday 9 June).
On Friday 23 June at six o’clock there will be an end of term concert by the children of the School at the Community Centre, Donore Avenue, beside St Teresa’s Church.
Saturday 24 June, feast of the birth of St John the Baptist, would have been my late Father’s ninety-seventh birthday, and will be the thirty-fourth anniversary of my ordination.
The Board of St Patrick’s Cathedral will meet on Monday 26 June and the Sixth Class Graduation of St Catherine’s NS will be at noon on Tuesday 27 June, while the last day of term will be Thursday 29 June, feast of St Peter the Apostle, another favourite day for ordinations in days gone by.

You may have heard, we’re doing it again: another St. Catherine’s Creative Writing Club magazine is coming out! It’s the last one this year, so it’s going to be a bumper one. This will be a Sci-Fi themed edition and I am delighted with the stories and poems the children have crafted for this one, and equally as impressed by the range of talent from across the school as the club now has members from second class! While stocks last! Thank you for your support as always; the magazine is a pleasure to produce and it’s galvanising every time to see it being read so enthusiastically around the school!
