Christmas 2016
Grateful thanks to all those who prepared the Churches for Christmas and the festival services. A small team of volunteers provided flowers and foliage, holly and ivy, at St Audoen’s and at St Catherine & St James. Mince pies to eat were provided for a festive reception after the Parish Carol Service and again with other nice things to eat in Epiphany season. The photograph shows some of the decorations provided by Clodagh Bowen and Barbara Hadden for St Audoen’s, whose granddaughter Margot Elizabeth was born just after Christmas. Her parents were married in St Audoen’s in 2015 and now live in London.
Memories of Charlie Webb
Family and friends of the late Charlie Webb gathered at Corrigan’s of Camden Street (where he had once lived) and in the Church of St Catherine & St James, followed by the interment in a family grave at Mount Jerome. A faithful member of the congregation for many years, although illness prevented him from attending in recent months, he will be very much missed by everyone who knew him. We offer our sincere sympathy and prayerful condolences to his wife Irene and all the family.
Some of the students at Trinity College, where Charlie Webb worked for many years, staged a sit-in, occupying the Dining Hall, at a time when FSL Lyons was Provost. It was a deeply distressing time for him and he died in office not long after. Among much other damage that was done Mrs Montgomery’s memorial was thrown to the floor. A young undergraduate, Mark Gardner, found it there and took it to his friend Charlie Webb at the Porter’s Lodge at the Front Gate who took care of it. At a recent Christmas reception for alumni attended by him and his sister Alison, he was pleased to be able to take a picture of her memorial, restored to its former place.

Parents of the schoolchildren have been alerted to the fact that Internet-connected devices made for popular Christmas presents this year. With this in mind The National Parents Council have made available a short online course to provide parents with information and skills to support their children’s online activity. Irish Bell News
The activities of Irish bellringers in the year 2016 is described in December’s ‘Irish Bell News’. Drogheda (St Peter): Derek and Martha Waller have recently joined the society and have been regular attenders at both practice and Service ringing. The addition of two experienced ringers is most welcome. Derek also assists in teaching beginners and learners and he can be handy with a spanner if necessary.

Dublin (St Audoen): Three of the six Bells have rung out since 1423, with ringing every Sunday for half an hour prior to Morning Service at 10.00 am. A full complement of ringers is invariably in attendance comprised of both experienced ringers and some of Derek McEndoo’s many recent recruits. Canon Mark Gardner is most welcoming and during recent cold weather a pre-ascent warm-up in the Church can always be relied on.
In recent weeks we have resumed our support of near neighbours, the Merchants Quay all night Café where our most vulnerable seek refuge and a warm meal. Donations of warm clothes, food and toiletries are left at the Church (and subsequently delivered to the Café by Valerie Halford, Churchwarden). We are very much hoping to build on this project during the next twelve months.

St Mary’s Home
Sr. Verity-Ann Clarendon is the only surviving member of the Community of St John the Evangelist, at St Mary’s Home, Pembroke Park, now run by an Association, on behalf of the Community. The website tells us that St Mary’s was a residential care home for female members of the Church of Ireland and subsequently registered as a nursing home. A new house is being built at St John’s House, opposite St Vincent’s Hospital, where Glenindare used to be. So the old house and the lovely Chapel will be vacated in time. The picture shows the congregation at the Friday morning service recently, a little reminder of a link between the Clarendon and Gardner families of All Saints’ Grangegorman. The Clarendon memorial window was destroyed in the fire of 1966.
New Year 2017 – a look into the archives
Sunday 15 January 2017 was the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Joe Coady, Dean’s Verger at Christ Church Cathedral, whose memorial is in the Mothers’ Union Chapel, beside the gates. He and Dean Tom Salmon had a very happy relationship and with a few dedicated relatives, friends and supporters kept the doors open in the worst days of poverty and city centre decay.

GARDNER, Frederick Allan Lynam, (late of The High School) – January 15, 2012, in his 92nd year. Sadly missed by his loving wife Margaret Isabel, his children Michael, Stephen, Mark, Alison and John, extended family and friends. Funeral Service on Friday (January 20) at 11 o’clock in All Saints’ Church, Phibsborough Road, afterwards to Glasnevin Crematorium.
