Solidarity
On Tuesday 13 January the two Archbishops of Dublin met at the Pro-Cathedral with the President, the Ambassador of France, former President Mary McAleese, the diplomatic corps, the Palestrina choir, and public representatives. The Jews, the Christians and the Moslems met there, the first time I have ever seen such an event. Five candles were placed beside the Paschal candle in the sanctuary, for the people of France, for the victims of the attacks, for all who work in the media for freedom of expression and the spread of truth, for those who work to protect law and order and foster peace, for all who work to build a society based on decency and dignity, mutual understanding and respect, solidarity and love. It was a most moving and atmospheric service which began in darkness and a candlelit procession. When the electric lights were turned on, the igniters flickered slowly, then more quickly, until the light steadied. They seemed to symbolise light struggling against the dark of winter, and finally triumphing. I was very glad to be there as a member of the Dublin Council of Churches and to take part in the Offertory procession.

News from St Catherine’s National School
Happy New Year from the green committee! There are some fundraising events for the green committee in the upcoming months to put in your diary:
On Wednesday 18 February, we will be having a cake sale in the school at 13.00. The theme for the cake sale will be biodiversity so bug/ plant/ wildlife themed cakes/buns would be great! We’ll send more details closer to the time.
On Friday 6 March we will be having a biodiversity action day to increase awareness. Activities will include a themed dress up. Children will be asked to pay €2 to participate in the dress up. If you have any ideas for activities to be included in the day or if you wish to volunteer please let Tracy or Caroline know.
We will be doing lots of planting and work in the school grounds in the coming term. Each teacher has been allocated a green space in the school yard. We would be very grateful if some parents would volunteer to help us prepare the flower beds as we come into the spring. Please let your child’s teacher know if you can help out. Any help would be most welcome! Alternatively, if you have any inspired ideas around the theme of biodiversity for our school please come and chat to:

The prefabs are now in use in the School year, and the playground extension into Players’ Square is being laid out. It’s interesting to see Teeling’s new Distillery being built in Newmarket, close to the ruins of Watkins’ Distillery. Work has not yet begun on the mirco-distillery to be installed in St James’ Church James St. The construction of the DIT campus at Grangegorman and the reopening of the railway line to the Broadstone Station are a welcome sight for a ‘Phibsborian’ like me!

From the Church Music Newsletter
Church Music Dublin has been pleased in recent times to publicise the occasions when Peregryne sings Compline in Dublin. So we are delighted to congratulate Stuart Kinsella and his band of singers for winning Best Overall Choir Award in Lyric FM’s Choirs for Christmas Competition. The €1,000 prize will serve, we are sure, to bring even more joy to the singers’ Christmas celebrations.
David McConnell, Zion Church
Peregryne have been most grateful for the support they have received from the Parish, and I’m greatly honoured to have been invited to sing the service with them at St Audoen’s and St Werburgh’s, and Christ Church Cathedral. Compline will next be sung 17.30 – 18.15 on Sunday 8 February at St Werburgh’s. Before and after the choir will sing J.S. Bach: Lobet den Herrn and Jesu, meine Freude. Stuart Kinsella comments; ‘this will conclude our singing of the six ‘canonical’ motets, although I gather Lobet is not confirmed as being by Bach himself … but it is pretty Bachy, so I’m glad to do it!’

Estonians in Dublin
The Estonian Christmas Service was on Sunday 7 December in the Church of St Catherine and St James. This time around the Estonian Choir from Ireland sang Christmas Carols and was accompanied by Pille Saatmäe from Estonia, who flew here just for this service. The new Estonian Ambassador in Dublin Kristi Karelshon was also present and enjoyed both service and the church very much. The next Estonian service would be around 22 February 2015, to be confirmed in January, next time also with choir.

Books wanted
The Trinity College Dublin Secondhand Booksale was the idea of Daphne Wormell (a pioneer of the ordination of women) who gathered a group of TCD graduates and staff in 1989 to organize a sale of books to raise funds for the College libraries as their contribution to the Quatercentenary (four hundred years) of Dublin University. The sale now involves current and retired staff and students as well as graduates. Books are accepted throughout the year at the reception desk of Goldsmith Hall on Pearse Street where volunteers sort, price and box them for the annual sale in the Exam Hall. A smaller one-day sale for students is held in the Goldsmith Hall at the start of the academic year.
