Church Review Notes June 2019

Orla Honer
On Sunday 19 May we commemorated the late Orla Honer at the Church of St Catherine & St James Donore Avenue, in the presence of her family and some of her siblings, a year to the day since a catastrophic fall led to her untimely and tragic demise subsequently in intensive care at St James’ Hospital. Her sisters Ann and Breda were joined by her four sons, and of them Kevin and Kyle read the lessons. Brian Honer, Churchwarden, chose the hymns; I know that my Redeemer lives; Angel voices, ever singing; Immortal, invisible, God only wise; One more step along the world I go.
It had been intended that Kevin would be confirmed at Pentecost, when his Mother was so ill. Now, a year later, we anticipate that he will finally be confirmed by the Archbishop. We will miss his Grandfather Liam Honer particularly on that occasion, who has attended the confirmation of the other thee grandsons, but who has passed away in the meantime, also at St James’ Hospital, after a long illness, at a great age. He would be proud to know that another grandson, Killian, is captain of the football team from St Patrick’s Cathedral Grammar School, now in the final of the Schools’ soccer tournament. Kyle is also on the same team.

We are particularly grateful to Cletus Ogbata for taking on the role of Churchwarden, at the request of the Easter Vestry, and thanks are due to David Hackett who has decided to step down from the position he occupied so well, continuing to be a deputy, when called upon to do so. His son Prev, or Prevailer, is on the same football team as the Honer boys at St Patrick’s Cathedral Grammar School. We are also glad that Brian Honer is willing to carry on his own dedicated work as Churchwarden. The Parish is well served by many volunteers who give of their time and their talents to both of the Parish Churches.

Family Service
The second Sunday of the month usually sees the celebration of Family Service at St Catherine & St James, and it is a delight to see young people coming to Church bringing their small children with them. When they are a bit bigger we hope that they will be interested in reading lessons and prayers, and in taking up the collection, as the Sunday School children used to do. Again we are grateful to the people who in a voluntary capacity prepare for the tea and coffee and bring nice things to eat after the service, in the Transept of the Church, a very useful separate space created there by the late the Revd Canon John Crawford. In time to come we hope that Sunday School will be held here once more, and we hope to build on a new relationship with St Catherine’s Thomas Street, and draw on their strength to assist us in providing the personnel, and to undertake the administration, which is so demanding now.

A tale of three parks.
The parks department of Dublin City Council has excelled itself in recent years, where three of the city centre parks are concerned. The grounds of Christ Church Cathedral were among the first taken into their care and kept open to the public, and now a viewing platform has been created where there was for many years a desolate patch of sloping ground. Gates long since disused have been restored and are now inviting visitors to some in. St Audoen’s Park has also had a new pavement laid and a new approach made with gates opened up where there were none before, and much pleasant planting. The parks department has very kindly agreed to open the gates early on Sunday mornings to facilitate access by the ringers and the congregation. The former Peace Park opposite Christ Church, locked up for many years, has been entirely renewed as a War Memorial.

St Audoen’s Bells
We are most grateful to the ringers from St Patrick’s who ring on Sundays at St. Audoen’s. Recently we welcomed three new ringers, trained by Derek McEndoo on Saturday mornings. His wife Kathleen looks after the ringing here, and is a member of the congregation.
